Great Buddha in Kamakura (鎌倉)

Giant Bronze Statue

Kamakura Daibutsu or also known as The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a colossal copper portrayal of Amida-butsu (Amitabha Buddha), which is the primary image of Kotoku-in. The fact that it sits in an open atmosphere makes it extraordinary amongst giant Buddha statues in Japan. However, in length, it falls short of the Great Buddha of Todai-Ji Temple at Nara; it essentially maintains its original structure; it is a precious example of Japanese historical Buddhist art.

Entrance location if you want to go inside the Great Buddha.
Entrance fee for 20yen each

The temple shop sells a variation of good-luck charms and other souvenirs, while the commemorative seal service welcomes travelers to stop in and obtain the commemorative red seal (goshuin). Guests to Kotoku-in can also enter inside the Great Buddha statue for a small additional cost. Behind the Great Buddha, you can even see some of the original bronze-cast lotus petals from the original base. In spring, guests can enjoy the beautiful sight of delicate cherry blossoms blooming around the Great Buddha and the grounds, while in autumn, the surrounding landscape is in red and gold. Whatever season you choose to explore Kamakura’s Great Buddha, you’re sure to be fascinated.
