In Tochigi Prefecture, you will discover the famous attraction that many travelers visit, Nikko Toshogu, or the so-called Toshogu Shrine, in which Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined as the deity Tosho Daigongen, “Great Deity of the East Shining Light.” The shrine is a magnificent memorial Ieyasu. Ieyasu was the founder of the (1603-1868), the third and last shogunal governments in Japanese history.
Toshogu shrine is a famous travel destination in Japan and is part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most famous Toshogu is found in Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture. The Ieyasu’s son, the second son, named Hidetada, a military dictator, instructed the construction of the Nikko Toshogu. Later, the third son Iemitsu also a military dictator, had the shrine greatly enlarged and extravagantly decorated. In Nikko Toshogu, you can find Nemuri-Neko and the Three wise monkeys with a different purpose to be in the shrine.
Amazing Wood Carving

Nemuri-Neko or “sleeping cat,” translated it as (nemuri, “sleeping” and Neko, “cat”) is a well-known wood carving by Hidari Jingorō (左甚五郎の作) found in the East corridor at Nikko Toshogu Shrine (日光東照宮) in Nikkō, Japan. Based on the writing, Zempei Matsumura’s book also states, Nemuri Neko “Sleeping Cat symbolizes Nikkō or the Spirit of Ieyasu, who was believed to be the incarnation of Yakushi Nyorai,” the Buddha of Healing, who offers medicinal remedies, gives nourishment to the mind, body, and spirit, and comforts the sick and cures ailments.

By entering the location, you will catch your attention to these wooden monkeys that portray different figures. The three wise monkeys are a Japanese pictorial philosophy, illustrates the traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on common sense or experience. “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Mizaru, who sees no evil, is covering its eyes. Kikazaru, who hears no evil, covering its ears, and Iwazaru, who speaks no evil, covering its mouth.
“The Three Mystic Apes” (Sambiki Saru) were characterized as “the attendants of Saruta Hito no Mikoto or Kōshin, the God of the Roads.”The Kōshin festival prevailed held on the 60th day of the calendar. It has stood demonstrated that during the Kōshin festival, according to ancient beliefs, one’s evil deeds might be reported to heaven “unless someone who did evil deed does take avoidance actions…”. It has a discerned that the three Mystic Apes, Not Seeing, Hearing, or Speaking, may have been the “things that one has done wrong in the last 59 days”.
Their beauty and amusing manifestations are sure to enrich your stay. If you get an opportunity to tour the Toshogu, I advise you to keep your eyes open.
