Welcome to Sapporo City. Sapporo 札幌 is the capital of Hokkaido and Japan’s fifth-largest city. Sapporo is also one of the nation’s youngest major cities. In 1857, the city’s community lived at just seven people. Sapporo lies in the southwest of Hokkaido, within the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River, a tributary stream of the Ishikari. It is considered the cultural, economic, and political center of Hokkaido.

Sapporo is the capital of the hilly northern Japanese island of Hokkaido; it is well-known for its beer, skiing, and yearly Sapporo Snow Festival featuring tremendous ice arts. The Sapporo Beer Museum follows the city’s brewing history and has tastings and a beer garden. Sapporo Beer Festival, contrarily known as the Sapporo Summer Festival, is one of the city’s most significant events in the summer. In Odori Park, enjoy an excellent pint in the temperate Hokkaido weather. Ski hills and jumps from the 1972 Winter Olympics are allocated within the city limits, and Niseko, a prominent ski resort, is nearby.
Sapporo Illumination Night
In 1981, Sapporo began the tradition of seasonal lights in Japan. During the event, various gleaming works of art of all sizes illuminate Odori Park, while glittering lights adorn the trees around Ekimae-Dori and Minami 1-jo Dori. If you want to get into the holiday spirit, be sure to head over to the German Christmas Market in Sapporo, held on two chome in Odori Park. This Christmas season, we’ll keep the lights on until midnight, making the area a great place to take a romantic late-night walk!

Clock Tower
The Clock Tower or so-called 時計台, Tokeidai is a symbol of Sapporo. The building was designed during the early period of Sapporo’s development in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was established.
Today, the Clock Tower fulfills as a museum with displays about the building’s history and Sapporo on the first floor. On the second floor are shows about the clock and a spacious ceremony hall that calls to mind the simple buildings of the colonial American Midwest.

When to go: In Clock Tower, you can visit it any season convenient to go from 8:45 to 17:10 (entry until 17:00). And Endless color sparkles in the white Sapporo winter is the best place to go.
