Chofukujuji Temple (長福寿寺)

Main hall, Kichizo-kun and Yume-chan

Located in Chonan Town, Chiba Prefecture,
Two cute statues will welcome you. Chofukujuji Temple was founded by the Tendai monk Saicho in 798 in acknowledgment of a proposal from Emperor Kanmu. It is popular for retaining the lengthiest administrator name of any temple in Japan: Sanzugato Gokurakutomon Rengedaijo Amidabo Taihei yasan Honjitsujoin Chofukujuji.

An elephant stone sculpture on the grounds named Kichizo-Kun is supposed to fulfill wishes for health and long life. Increased wealth, and happy family life to people who rub their feet.

Proper way of wishing

This is Kichizo. He is an elephant who grants your wishes. While rubbing Kichizo-Kun’s foot clockwise in the order of right forefoot → right hindfoot → left forefoot, let’s keep in mind while chanting a request three times.

On the left side, this is Yume – chan the female elephant who is blessed with love and marriage.

When to go: In any season that you are convenient to go. It’s open everyday around 9:00- 16:30.

Getting there: by train, Get off at “Mobara Station” on the JR Sotobo Line, get off at Kominato Bus and get off at Atagocho, and walk for 3 minutes. When you get off at the Atagocho stop, there is a 7-Eleven in front of you, so pass in front of the store and walk to the left. Chofukujuji Temple is 150 meters away.

By bus, High-speed buses are available from Tokyo Station, Yokohama Station, and Haneda Airport.
Please use “Chonan Car Park”. However, please note that there is about 1 km from the bus stop to Chofukujuji Temple.

By car, When using the highway
Go down the Mobara Chonan IC, turn left at the Senda intersection, and take “National Highway 409” toward Kisarazu. After 3 minutes by car, there is a sign “Kichizo-kun” on the right side, so please follow the directions and turn right.

  • The nearest taxi is “Yutaka Taxi 0475-46-0123”.
